Lulu Guinness

We sit down with British Fashion Designer Lulu Guinness to talk this seasons must have, quick style tips and guilty pleasures!

Why did you choose Fashion as your vocation?

I didn’t at first, I studied graphic design initially and didn’t get into handbag design until after I had my first daughter Tara.

What advice do you have for people starting out in the industry?

Trust your gut and try not to get too influenced by other people’s opinions.

Having launched in 1989, why have you chosen now to hold your first LFW show?

Over the last 18 months we have opened multiple stores across Asia and LFW has such a global reach I thought the timing was perfect to have my first presentation at LFW.

Must have accessory of the season?

Adorning your hair with a fabulous accessory!

What do you look for in a handbag?

It has to fit my phone in, even all of my clutches are now designed to fit an iPhone!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere and anywhere but mostly art, I have collaborated with illustrators and mixed media artists for previous seasons and my most recent collection is inspired by Bridget Riley and Franco Grignano but I am also now a big fan of Instagram and I think it is a wonderful inspirational tool!

Trend you would most like to see make a comeback?

Anything vintage!

 What’s your go to magazine?

I read the Business of Fashion on my iPad most mornings. I also love to read UK, Italian and Japanese Vogue.

Quick style tip to perfect any outfit?

I tend to wear a lot of black and let my accessories do the talking, I also have a great collection of necklaces that I think help lift an all-black outfit.

What would be your ideal way to spend a weekend?

I like getting out of London on the weekend to the countryside. If not I don’t stray too far away from home. I love trawling the vintage shops on Portobello or I try and get to an exhibition – there’s an exhibition at the Courthauld Gallery that I have been meaning to go and see!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Smoking….

The achievement that you’re most proud of in your career?

I get my main sense of achievement from making people happy through my designs, whenever someone tells me that their bag has cheered them up – it is the best thing to hear.

If you were to choose any other path in life what would it be?

I would love to have been a photographer!
